So often I “tweet” about the importance of commenting on blogs as a business strategy that I thought I would share a short blog about “how to” for the small business owner. If you do not have your own blog yet( ok, even if you do) this is a SMART strategy! My goal is to comment on ten blogs a week where I can offer my value – as a biz owner – do the same and watch what happens to your search engine visibility. This will increase your credibility with potential customers! If you are smart about how you language your comment on a blog it can invite people to be a part of what you offer. It can increase your credibility, and it can drive traffic.
The video below will share some great tips to commenting effectively! This is one of many videos I share with my clients on the Social Networking Coaching Club
Taking the time to think strategically about how you comment can really help. What change will you make next week? Maybe while you play Blogger Monday with Ann Evanston?
Ann M. Evanston is a “Chief Breakthrough Officer” teaching other Business Warriors how to slow down, and find the most unique part of their business that makes them stand out among the crowd. She has been named one of the top marketing consultants by About.com, is a guest blogger for Showcasing Women and takes pride in moving you from “blah, blah, blah” to “BOOM, BOOM. BOOM!”
Good job warrior girl. I came to support you and was rewarded. Didn't know about screencast.com. There is your point in essence; come to give and you shall receive.
Love ya!

An Ron! I so love having your face on my site! Oh yes, and screencast is a great tool! Media Roles are great of you have several videos you want a group to watch!
This was really great Ann. Thanks for sharing. I love using the Disqus commenting. I've found that it makes it more fun to comment and the way it interacts and makes sharing easy is great. I like the ability to see what comments people leave on other blogs also.
So true isn't it Cassie! They did a fabulous job with it! I think everyone should put it on their blog! (BTW, LOVED Japanese “butt” skirts! giggle!)
Hii im smith tell me caisestewart what did u get extra quality of disqus commenting .
Awesome Ann – as always, you deliver great value!
I wonder what you do when you find a blog that disallows commenting? I've come across this a bit in my wandering through Music Business blogs.
Thanks,

Thanks Debra, well most have a blog comment section, but they are not always easy to find. Try clicking on the title and scrolling down just to be sure, then you have no choice but to move on and make sure you never go back! (unless what you re getting is SO HUGE, then just subscribe and read via email!)
Great to “meet” you Ann. I dropped in to reinforce your suggestion that small businesses can truly benefit from commenting in blogs. I have used it to greatly increase traffic and subscribers and to meet awesome thinkers and writers.
You and your readers may be interested in my most recent post about Social Networking and also a popular post that measured the increase from commenting first and then sharing the posts you comment in across your Social Networks.
Since I'm new here I didn't provide the links but I can if you wish. They would be easy to find right now. Later those interested could find them by searching for “Blog Traffic up 54.87%” and “Social Networking is NOT Chat”. P.S. My blog is dofollow with both CommentLuv and KeywordLuv so commentators are amply rewarded.

As I just started posting comments for blog and facing problem of lots of rejections. I think your suggestion would be helpful for me. I will let you know if its work for me too.
I think you will find if you use your real name instead of the name of your blog it will help that tremendously! The name has a “spammy” feel, so embrace it but be a real person connected to it!
Great post Ann, this really is sound advice for any small business thats looking to increase their online prescence. This is however in my opinion a very small factor within business strategy and more specifically online strategy. For anyone thats interested in developing business strategy you might want to check out http://www.meettheboss.tv/, a fantastic business resource thats designed to help people reach their full potential.
Thanks again for the post!
Tobias I in no WAY said this was the only strategy! As a matter of fact, if you listen to my radio show, or read my blog or get my eBooks, I am 100% about STRATEGY for the small business owner! One blog, cannot in my opinion, cover all there is to know, nor should it be the intention of a blog, especially a business persons blog (there is strategy in that)!
Hi Ann, I think you may have misunderstood me slightly, I did not mean in any way to imply that you said blog commenting was the only strategy! I realise that you are 100% about strategy and I commend that, I was merely trying to express my opinion regarding blog commenting as part of a business strategy.

I love this strategy, Ann! Since you taught it to me I’m a blog commenting fool. I personally like to comment before reading other’s comments. After I read other’s comments, I may travel to their website, see what they have to offer, and even join their fan page. I’ve made a lot of new acquaintances that way. Commenting I believe is a generous way to support your fellow bloggers.

Thanks for sharing this Sharon! Great article.
Thanks for all the reminders Ann. You know I love commenting since doing your Social Networking Coaching Club. I sometimes forget to put my link and tagline in my enthusiasm to post the comment so need to work on remembering that.
I am getting more strategic in what I say – often mentioning my AuPairs or that I’m looking for families to host AuPairs.
I also love Disqus and use it on my blog now and I also really love the CommentLuv plug in on wordpress as it gives back to the commenters (and to me when others use it). I google my name now and there are comments from me going pages back. I like the idea of going back and replying to earlier comments and I have just spotted a couple that a will go back to. Always play Blogger Monday on Facebook even if I don’t have a blog post in play and I’m getting better at finding blogs written by my target market. All learned from you and this is one of my favorite things about using Social Media to grow my business!

I am a relatively new blogger and am internalizing the message about commenting on other blogs as a way to increase my visibility. I am not selling a product or service on my blog – it’s mostly a humor blog so I am wondering whether the tips are different for someone like me.
BTW, great article/video. Thanks Ann.

It seems too simple however when I first learned about getting involved in others blogs and contributing to the conversation with relevant comments my email subscription list on my site and the connections I’ve made have increased 10 fold. Make it a daily habit to comment and you will be surprised by the results.
thanks Jason for sharing your success!
Thanks Ann. I love getting to know fellow bloggers in my niche. The more that we thoughfully comment on other blogs, the more we get known by other people and build relationships with them because they want to check you out. People want to know who you are. I always try to reserve time to comment on my own blog posts to keep the conversation going and help others get to know, like and trust me.
If I understand correctly, posting a comment on a blog post adds new content to that page. When there’s new
content on a webpage, the search engines are signaled to come back and re-index it. So we are receiving more traffic from the search engines every time a new comment is posted.

i have seen firsthand that is an excellent tool for small business owners, + just as importantly, it’s enjoyable for me. i enjoy reading blogs, learning about new things + connecting with people + commenting on blogs is a way to connect with the blog owner *and* the other commenters, i have noticed. like louise, i sometimes forget to put my url + tagline at the end of the comment because i get so eager to hit ‘post’ but i’m getting better at it! thanks, ann.

The ROI in blogging has moved me from being hidden on page 5 to being listed several times on the first 10 pages of Google. Thank goodness I’m a grad & Lifetime member of SNCC revisiting the online training refreshed my memory about why blogging is so important. Its harder for me because of my speaking engagements – so I spend more time on FB, Twitter, & LinkedIn. My new strategy is to prioritize where I spend me time: Blog commenting (if nothing else), Blogging (big challenge) Twitter, FB. LI. Really appreciate the idea when blogging to add wisdom or educate.

This is the first lesson I learned with Blogger Monday, and I’m expecting to continue to have the message driven home with Social Networking Coaching Club. In fact, I really like developing myself as a reader/commenter. There’s something freeing about being interested in what I can find to comment on rather than just worrying immediately about whether people are reading me. There’s much of a fluid feel. Also, I love having a target (e,.g., 10 comments) that helps organize me as I think about strategy.

Great tips…learned much of that by watching you and your SNCC graduates. Now that I’ve gotten the hang of blogging regularly I will schedule in commenting on more blogs that relate to my industry. I need to install Disqus as well. Thanks for the reminder and tips.

Building Relationships….One Card at a Time
What an excellent article. I particularly find the comments section interesting to read. Although the strategy is to comment, I always learn something from those who have commented before me. After reading many of them (sometimes there are hundreds, sometimes only 2) I am able to add to and build a conversation.

I really enjoyed this post Ann. Isn’t it great to connect with people through what might seem like random comments but which turn out to be valuable pointers leading to meaningful connections. I do love to take the time to always get back to people with some sort of feedback, no matter how small. I’ve gained business in the past in this way and also made some lovely friends. Thanks for sharing Ann.

I think that blog commenting is a gray hat technique in SEO? That is, if you do it on do-follow blogs that allows your name to be linked to your homepage. Still, I think that the art of blog commenting only comes down to: Sharing Value and Fostering Community.. beyond those ‘thank you, nice post’ one-liner thing. It’s all about keeping the channels of conversation open and alive as well.
You should try hanging out in my community, it’s a real blog community!
I also suggest blogging as part of your business strategy. It will give you good visibility and at the same time it will also help your search engine rankings.
Great post and video Ann. I’ve now joined Blogger Monday and am looking forward to seeing how things develop while making lots of fabulous connections and learning lots along the way.
Thanks for sharing Ann. 🙂 x

Useful information Ann. Thanks. I’ve been trying to set some commenting goals for myself. Following the rule “If you click on it comment.” should help me get started.
I also like the suggestion about putting my name and web site in the comment – why didn’t I think of that sooner!

Turning Small Business Owners into Competent Business Leaders
I’m seeing a burst of blog posts recently on this topic of commenting. I think it’s great, and shows how blogging is becoming even more social — an opportunity for connection and discussion, not just a soapbox for individual bloggers.
I’m happy to see that most blog comments are positive and supportive. But I find the most interesting ones are those that take a position – either a contrary position to the blogger’s (politely), or at least take the discussion in a new direction. I love to see that because it leads to healthy discourse and public exchange of ideas – something I think we need more of in our culture.
Ann,
Three phrases in your blog post above stood out:
offer my value
increase your credibility
drive traffic
That’s really it in a nutshell no matter what your blog is about.
Regarding blog commenting, I consider myself to be a newbie and your video was very clear and helpful. Thanks for the tip of using Name + URL + Tag Line… That one’s a keeper.

The small businesses are getting ignored in these issues, especially when looking for small business loans or financing.
The big corporations don’t seem to have an issue raising money by selling bonds, big bank loans. Small business loans aren’t getting approved that’s why so many are looking to business cash advances to leverage their credit card receipts.

Inspiring.
Thank you.
Great advice. Commenters should also be on the lookout for credible blogs and online magazines on which to post in. If the publication allows, you may get a valuable backlink for your website’s SEO.
Be sure to leave behind a thought-provoking comment. Something that will educate and inform readers. Not just the words, “Great Post.”
With each comment you make, include your auto signature. Why not? After all, it is your comment and you should take full credit for it. If people like it, they may want to get to know you better and click on the links to wherever you want to forward them to (Website, Blog, etc.)
