When I first started my tutoring business I was definitely in the “income” and “expenses” head. As the business has grown and I’ve been able to see what works and what doesn’t, I’ve definitely made that mental shift. Such a great tip, Ann!

Since beginning marketing my businesses two years ago, I am starting to experience increased revenue which has allowed me to replace a lot of worn equipment and replenish supplies. It’s a great feeling to be able to do that, to invest in myself/my business. I have been caught in the income-expense cycle for some time and it has always felt so burdensome because the rent still had to be paid even though the income was so sparse. I like this perspective much better. Thank you Ann Evanstan and the SNCC for helping me more forward!
I think I need to do this. I know I have lots of mental changes internally to make and while working on them, I know I’m bringing up fears and blocks to get cleared as well. And this is my year!

I love this reframe. I have been thinking a lot about what and how I invest in my busimess lately, but have never thought about the revenue vs income before. I think I have definitely fallen into the fear downward spiral of “Not Making Enough Income”. When I start to think of revenues coming in and creating a good tracking system/spread sheet, I get excited.
The distinction you make between solopreneur (contractor) and entrepreneur (business owner) is imperative. So often those words get used interchangeably yet they are clearly two different types of people. They think differently – with the entrepreneurs following much more of what you are saying about revenue and investment. And, when I look at what they are accomplishing in their businesses, there is a clear gap between those solopreneurs and the entrepreneurs. Your explanation helps clarify that gap wonderfully!Jennifer Peek | Small Business StrategistFind Your New GrooveThe Freedom to Build Your Business Your Way
Although they are just ‘words’, it is amazing how our minds hear these words and how it definitely affects our actions whether it is in our business lives or our personal lives. We believe what we tell ourselves and if we are telling a mindset of scarcity/work (using those words you said) vs. abundance (investments) it will make a difference.

I had to take notes when listening to this! Income vs. revenue, expense vs. investment. I can see there is a shifting mindset when I pay attention to these words. I used to be a contractor, in fact, so there is a real change in no longer having that hat on. I like being challenged to think differently depending on what words are used.

I’ve never thought of it that way. I certainly think of some of what I spend as investments. My coach for instance is clearly an investment. I love thinking of the money I spend on an assistant as an investment rather than an expense. It really is a different mindset. Now i have to look at the revenue versus income. I think I’ll start by changing the category in Quicken!

I have invested way more than i have made at this point but i truly believe that it was an investment and that my business will benefit moving forward
Thinking about expenses as “investments” really changes it. I know my hubby looks at what I spend as expenses, but I know I’m investing in creating a long-standing business. Most people in my company just run it like it is, but I’m creating something above and beyond a simple direct sales business, so it’s key to invest in making it grow vs. trying to cut corners. Unfortunately, I’m still at a point where I have to choose which investments can truly be afforded and have to place priority in some over others.
Good advice – small mind shift – big change! As always, you inspire and awe me!
